What is it?
IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol, primarily with longer IP addresses (128 bit vs 32 bit for IPv4) to overcome
the pending shortage (perhaps as soon as 2011) of IPv4 addresses.

What is Aussiewide doing to migrate to this technology?
We now running both IPv4 and IPv6 technology over our core network in Brisbane, with global IPv6 and local Australian
IPv6 peering through Pipe Networks in Queensland and New South Wales.

How can you get involved?

Currently IPv6 is available via two methods:

• Tunnel Broker -
  Using a software 'tunnel', IPv6 access is available to all users of the Internet. (we use tunnelbrooker but there are
  others who provide the same service)
  
  With this method, tunnel client software is loaded on to your end system. The tunnel server allows your equipment
  to access to IPv6 even if your ADSL router or other devices in your network do not support IPv6 access directly
  Systems currently supported for use with  Tunnel Broker include but not limited to Windows, Linux and Cisco routers.
   
• Ethernet  -
  Direct connection to the Aussiewide IPv6 network with a static IPv6 address allocation.
  Available for co-located customers in our Brisbane Co-Location Facility. We know offer BGP and IP transit services.
   

Notes:
There is no extra charge for using IPv6 on the Aussiewide Network, to assist our co-location customers we are assigning
generous IPv6 assignments to assist with migration.

All data transferred by IPV6 is still counted as record your monthly data downloads by measuring the total bytes delivered
to your service.  Using the Tunnel Broker mythology, the IPv6 packets are encaped into IPv4 packets in order to move
IPv6 data between your end system and the tunnel broker service you decide to use.

Accordingly, data downloads measured using IPv6 will result in higher reading then when compared to a download of the
same quantity of payload data using the current ipv4 schema.
